Former Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Charlie Batch joins Adagio Health to spotlight 50 Years of WIC
Pittsburgh, PA (May 31, 2024) – Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro recently declared the month of May as “WIC Month,” a fitting proclamation as the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), turns 50 this year. And Adagio Health was thrilled to welcome Former Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Charlie Batch to the celebration!
Fifty years ago, Charlie was one of western Pennsylvania’s first WIC babies. Today, he helps to promote all of the benefits and support that WIC continues to provide to local babies, toddlers, moms, and families. Charlie visited Adagio Health’s Beaver County WIC office on May 30 for a special photo shoot, along with a tour of the Adagio Health’s new “WIC on Wheels” van and the Teaching Kitchen located on site.
“What a thrill to have Charlie Batch visit our WIC location,” said BJ Leber, President and CEO of Adagio Health. “Our thanks also to Public Health Program Administrator Jessica Smith at PA WIC, and the entire PA Department of Health team for their support of Adagio Health WIC and local WIC agencies across the Commonwealth, along with the babies, moms, and families we are privileged to serve.”
Since 1974, the WIC program has helped provide resources and support for pregnant women, infants, children, and families.
“The WIC program is such a fundamental piece of a family’s overall health and success. From breastfeeding support to grocery shopping assistance to finding the best foods for your family, WIC creates a community of care that many moms have said to me they are so grateful for,” said Adagio Health’s WIC Director Samantha Elms.
The Adagio Health WIC program is available in Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, and Indiana counties. Each office has a teaching kitchen, food cupboard featuring fresh produce, and providers who can help participants on their prenatal and postpartum journeys with their children.
A WIC mom from Beaver county who consulted with a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor recently said, “As a first-time nursing mom, I didn’t know what to expect and having time to connect with other moms once a month has been so helpful. We can meet other moms in the area, encourage one another, and learn tips that have worked for some. That connection has been invaluable.”
Throughout the remainder of the year, Adagio Health WIC offices will have special outreach connected to WIC’s 50th anniversary, celebrating the impact the program has had, the dedicated staff, and the WIC participants who care so deeply about their children and family’s health.
