Caring for Veterans: How Adagio Health Focuses on Women Who Have Served
At Adagio Health, caring for veterans isn’t just something we do: It’s part of who we are. Our work goes far beyond appointments and services. It’s about showing up, listening deeply, and responding with compassion that truly meets veterans where they are.
At a recent veteran stand down, one conversation changed everything. A veteran approached our team, hoping to find help to quit tobacco. Years of smoking and chewing had taken a toll – he had lost his teeth and didn’t know where to even begin.
But he didn’t have to figure it out alone.
With encouragement from our staff, a personalized plan, and resources like the PA Quit Line and Adagio Health’s Tobacco Cessation program, he took the first step. And then another. Within months, he was completely tobacco free.
His success didn’t just transform his life. It sparked something bigger. Partner organizations took notice and asked Adagio Health to lead a wellness group for veterans, allowing us to support even more men and women who served our country.
Additionally, not long ago, another veteran contacted Adagio Health in urgent need of confidential reproductive health care. She didn’t know where to turn, and she knew she needed help fast.
Within hours, she was seen by one of our dedicated nurse practitioners, received lifesaving treatment, and finally felt safe enough to breathe again.
But her healing didn’t stop there. She later shared that, because of the care and compassion she received at Adagio Health, she found the strength to begin mental health counseling. This is the kind of care that can change the trajectory of someone’s life.
And shared experiences as veterans often foster lasting connections, and some longtime patients affectionately call Adagio Health’s Care Navigator Amanda Smith (who is also a veteran) “Aunty Amanda,” highlighting the trust and camaraderie that develops in this community.
These are just a few real-life stories that reflect Adagio Health’s commitment to trauma-informed, veteran-centered care. In recognition of Veterans Day, the organization is reaffirming its Women Veterans’ Care Initiative, which provides comprehensive health and wellness services at no cost, regardless of insurance.
The program covers co-pays, transportation, supplies, and program materials for eligible patients in Butler, Fayette, Indiana, Lawrence, and Venango counties, and many health, wellness, and nutrition services are free regardless of coverage.
Eligibility is intentionally barrier-free, with no DD-214, discharge status, or length-of-service requirements.
“Every woman veteran deserves care built on trust, respect, and understanding,” said Alicia Schisler, President & CEO of Adagio Health. “At Adagio Health, we’re here to make sure they receive exactly that.”
