Adagio Health WIC Farmers Markets are back for the summer

WIC participants, seniors, veterans, and the public can access fresh produce from PA farmers

Pittsburgh, PA (July 25, 2023) – Now in its second year, Adagio Health continues the Farmers Markets initiative featuring pop-up Farmers Markets at Adagio Health WIC locations throughout western Pennsylvania. The initiative is designed to benefit WIC clients and members of the community, and to support local farmers.

“We’re excited to bring back the pop-up markets to our WIC families and the communities! It’s a great opportunity that increases access to local produce to enhance nutrition while supporting local farmers and the local economy,” said Britney Zwergel, Vice President of Nutrition and Education Programs at Adagio Health.

Adagio Health is bringing back produce from local farmers that were featured last year and some new farmers in the region, including Enon Country Gardens, Apple Castle, Freedom Farms, Yarnick’s Farm, Appleseed Farms, and Dillner Family Farms. These farmers represent several counties in western PA: Armstrong, Butler, Indiana, Lawrence, Beaver, and Westmoreland counties.

Participants can expect fresh apples, berries, cherries, grapes, artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, corn, tomatoes, turnips, yams, and so much more at Adagio Health’s WIC Farmers Markets. To see the full list of eligible fruit, vegetables, and herbs, visit https://adagiohealth.org/farmers-markets

Farmers Markets are open Monday – Wednesday at all WIC offices during normal business hours. Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks are available to eligible WIC participants, which allows clients to receive FMNP checks at WIC offices and purchase fresh produce from the market that same day. FMNP checks are designated at $30 per person in the form of three $10 checks. Eligible seniors may also receive FMNP checks from their local Senior Center and will receive $50 to use at the Farmers Markets.

Available at all Adagio Health WIC and Medical Office locations are Veteran Vouchers that can only be used at the pop-up farmers markets’ locations in Armstrong, Butler, Indiana, Lawrence, and Beaver counties. The $10 voucher will allow veterans access to fresh, locally grown PA produce throughout the summer.

Members of the community may also visit and purchase fresh produce at Adagio Health WIC Farmers Markets too.  Some restrictions apply.
