What you need to know about World Aids Day this year

December 21, 2023 by Adagio Health
World Aids Day is a call to action to enable and support communities to offer HIV services to vulnerable populations, according to the Pan American Health Organization. Those vulnerable populations include gay and bisexual men, sex workers, transgender individuals, drug users, people in prison, or men who have sex with men, according to PAHO. The rate of transmission within these communities are usually higher than the general public.

According to a Biden-Harris White House Fact Sheet published this December, 36% of the 1.2 million people in the United States who could benefit from PrEP were prescribed the medication. PrEP reduces the risk of HIV up to 99% when taken correctly.

PrEP is offered at all Adagio Health locations. This is an important step to battling the HIV epidemic in the United States as more and more patients can find relief in knowing they can be protected.

Patients can test for HIV right at the office and receive PrEP that same day with a negative test result. Adagio Health offers the medication in pill form or as an injectable prescription – whatever fits with your lifestyle. Along with PrEP, PEP is also offered. PEP is for patients who may have been exposed to HIV and can take the medication within 72 hours of exposure.

With the initiatives from the federal government regarding the HIV epidemic and communities throughout the country making testing and treatment for HIV more accessible, we can continue to reduce infections from HIV.
