Relocation of WIC office provides more accessible care to Kittanning community

Pittsburgh, PA (September 30, 2022) — Previously a bank and loan center, Adagio Health’s new Armstrong County WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) office at 201 Market Street in Kittanning is more accessible and reaches a greater population for those in need of WIC services. Now located on a bus line and in the heart of downtown Kittanning near other stores and businesses, residents can easily recognize the location and the services Adagio Health can provide for the community … and it also features a bank vault from the location’s previous tenants!

"The outpouring of support from the community in our new location has reaffirmed the need for increased access to WIC services in this area," said Britney Zwergel, Vice President of Nutrition and Education Programs at Adagio Health. 

Eligible pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children (up to age 5) can find supplemental nutrition programs, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and aid for food insecure families through Adagio Health’s WIC food cupboard – all available at the newly opened location.

“We are thrilled to open this new office in downtown Kittanning,” said Alicia Schisler, Chief of External Affairs. “It’s an opportunity to connect with Armstrong County residents more easily and efficiently, while making sure local moms, dads, grandparents and other caregivers understand how WIC can benefit their families – from groceries, to breastfeeding support, baby formula, and even pop-up produce stands. At Adagio Health, we think WIC families are awesome!”

Adagio Health’s Armstrong County WIC team already serves roughly 1,000 moms and families monthly. The new Kittanning location provides an opportunity for more efficient health and wellness care and is more convenient for families to travel to than the previous location.

The new office has also provided an opportunity for greater investment in the Kittanning community. Where there was an empty storefront, there is now a new, lively, Adagio Health WIC office that takes a celebratory approach to parents and children. Many of the neighborhood businesses and shop owners have already stopped by to offer their support. Additionally, the Armstrong County Community Action Food Bank, Head Start and low-income housing resources are near the new WIC office and offer additional pathways for families seeking support.

“Our new WIC office space will also host our Power Up Program that provides nutrition education and public health support to Armstrong County and Apollo Ridge School Districts, Armstrong Head Starts and food pantries. We are also looking at the potential for opening a teaching kitchen at this location down the road, to hold cooking classes for WIC participants and offer Cooking Matters® courses to benefit the Kittanning community,” said Ms. Zwergel.

Monthly, Adagio Health’s WIC program serves approximately 9,000 clients in five counties (Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Indiana and Lawrence).
