Sex and COVID-19

July 3, 2020 by Adagio Health
Before the coronavirus pandemic, the CDC declared that STDs had hit an all-time high.  Adagio Health knows the importance of healthy communities, especially as we combat the coronavirus pandemic. That is why Adagio Health’s team of reproductive experts are here for you for both in-person and through telehealth visits.

We offer services such as comprehensive reproductive health care including birth control, STD testing and treatment, HIV testing and referrals, PrEP prescriptions as well as other general adult health services.

As communities continue to navigate the coronavirus pandemic known as COVID-19, we have learned that practicing social distancing, and wearing a mask or other face covering over your mouth and nose can offer protection from infection. There are also steps you can take to protect yourself while engaging in sexual activity.

We are still learning about COVID-19 and sex. While early research suggests it does not effectively transmit through sexual intercourse, the virus does spread through direct contact with saliva or mucus, which means kissing can easily pass the virus.

When it comes to COVID-19 (and sexually transmitted diseases as well) – you are your safest sex partner.  Beyond that, when choosing a sex partner, a live-in, consenting partner is the safest option.  It is recommended that you avoid close contact with anyone outside of your household. If you typically meet sexual partners online, consider replacing in person dates with chat rooms or other virtual ways to connect.

When you do engage in sexual activity with a consenting partner, hygiene practices before and after sex are more important than ever, especially before and after a sexual encounter. Using condoms and dental dams can reduce exposure to saliva during sexual activity.

It is also a good idea to check in with your partner before engaging in sexual activities and if they aren’t feeling well in any respect, it is best to postpone.
