Advocacy

Advocacy is a key element of Adagio Health's mission to "provide high quality reproductive and related health care services that are innovative and responsive to the needs of women and their families." Through outreach and advocacy efforts, Adagio Health seeks to promote health programs, educate about health issues, and develop collaborative relationships to support women's health.

Adagio Health provides a wide variety of health care services that are essential to the well-being of women and their families. Services include obstetrics and gynecology, breast and cervical cancer screening, STD testing and treatment, nutrition counseling, adoption services, teen pregnancy prevention, HIV prevention, sexuality education for teens, community education, parent education, professional training, and research.

Adagio Health has a tremendous impact on the health of women and families in western Pennsylvania. Each year:

  • Nearly 70,000 women turn to Adagio Health for reproductive health care services, such as comprehensive screening, birth control, and STD treatment.
  • About 14,000 families receive supplemental foods and nutrition counseling through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program.
  • More than 15,000 women learn about the importance of mammograms, and nearly 3,000 older women receive breast and cervical cancer screening.
  • More than 1,400 healthy babies are born as a result of Adagio Health's pregnancy care.
  • More than 25,000 students participate in health education and life skills programs.

These health programs have many benefits. Women and families are healthier. Health problems can be treated sooner; thus, the costs are lower. There are fewer unintended pregnancies and fewer abortions.

In order to ensure access for all women, Adagio Health fees are based on a sliding scale according to the patient's income and family size. Adagio Health relies heavily upon government funding to make these programs possible. Without adequate public support, Adagio Health cannot sustain its existing services, much less expand them to meet the needs of uninsured and underinsured women.
